Fun Facts About The Heart

The heart is one of the most important parts of the body and it is worthwhile that everyone gets a little more familiar with how it works, below is a list of a few facts everyone should know:

  • A heart has around 100,000 beats per day with 2000 gallons of blood passing through the heart each day
  • The cardiac conduction system is the electrical system behind each heartbeat which allows for the heart to beat without having to think about it
  • Because of the cardiac conduction system, the heart can continue to beat even when removed and outside of the body
  • There are four chambers in the heart, two consisting of the atria which receives blood and the other two of the ventricles which discharge blood
  • The right side of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood and sends it to the lungs to become oxygenated again
  • The left side of the heart receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body
  • There’s around 60,000 miles of blood vessels stretching throughout your body, meaning there’s a lot of work your heart does each day
  • The rate at which the heart contracts is based on several factors  including exercise, dehydration, medication, disease, and preexisting conditions
  • The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and the three types of blood vessels which are the arteries, veins, and capillaries
  • A normal pulse is around 60-100 beats per minute but can vary from person to person
  • The human heart weighs a little under one pound

It is not an understatement to stress the importance of our hearts and what they do for our bodies, which is why it is very important to keep up with our heart health and ensure we are doing everything we can to maintain heart wellness.
